The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 1888. The Vacant Judgeship
Thb howl which has been raised among tLe newspapers published in the larger towns of the colony, anent the appointment of a successor to the late Judge Johnston, is far from oreditable, either to their good sense or good feeling. Without waiting for the slightest movement on the part of Ministers in the matter, they have agitated and urged reasons why one : man should be appointed, and why j several others should not be appointed, j The stand taken by the Premier in the i House should meet the cordial ap- ; proval of everyone who is desirous j that the selection of gentlemen to oc- j cupy seats on the Judicial Bouch | should not be forced by popular clamour. The Premier told the House " that the Government would not be driven by articles in the newspapers, and it was already decided that the appointment would not be filled till after the session was over. It was absolutely indecent to appoint a successor to Mr Justice Johnston till the Government had received a despatch in the usual way announcing that gentleman's death." This ia conclusive, and we have no doubt Mr Wakd, whose name has been made co prominent in this connection, will be heartily glad. If anyone waa ever justified in this generation to utter the prayer, " Save me from my friends." Judjre Ward is that man.
