PALMERBTON v. FEILDING, The first cup match of the season was ylayed on the Oval on Saturday between the Palmerston and Feilding teama, and resulted in a win for the local team by 1 point te nil. The ground was in a dreadful Btate, being nothing but pools of water, owing to the heavy rains. The teams were as follows : — Palmerston—Pull back, Jewell ; threequarters, Luxford (captain), Jackaon, and Isherwood ; halves, Hall and Keys; forwards, Millton, Hanna, F. Jackson, Seeker, Smith, Olipbant, Astbury, Stock, and Skerman. Feilding — Full back, Broughton; threequarters, Parr, GL Saywell, and Smith; halves, Henry and F. Saywell; forwards, E. Whisker, Manning, Iveson, Hodges, M. Belfit, Kitchen, Lawton, 0. and H. Keetly. Messrs Stallard and Booth umpired, and Mr Hartgill acted as referee. From the commencement of the game the play was confined to the forwards all through, the backs being utterly unable to pick the ball up at all. Play was centred in the visitors' quarters most of the first spell, they being forced down no less than four times in succession. Towards the end of the spell Parr brought the ball just on to the visitors' goal line, and after a few scrimmages H. Keetly fell over the line, and scored first blood. Parr took the kick, which was a difficult one, but failed to increase the score. Shortly after half time was called. The visitors had the best of the second spell, playing with great determination, and on several occasions went very near scoring, the local team being forced down twice. The Palmerston "forwards made several good rushes, but were stopped in good time by the Feilding backs. The Feilding forwards kicked the ball too hard on many occasions, losing them one or two very good opportunities of increasing their score, as three times ! they allowed their opponents co foroe down by kicking hard when close on their line, and wheii in a first class position to score. For the victors B. Whisker and Manning played the beet game on the ground. Of the other forwards they all played so well that it would be hard to select the best. Broughton was the only back that distinguished himself, gaining a lot of ground by his kicking. For the visitors Hanna, Millton, Jackson, and Oliphant were the best of the forwards, while Isherwood and Keys were most noticeable of the backs. Warbrick's native team made a good start on Saturday by beating the Hawke's Bay representative team. The Englishmen were beaten bj South Melbourne on Saturday by seven goals to three. .«^_
