The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, JUNE 26, 1888. The New Insurance Tariff

For the information of insurers we give a few particulars of the new tariff which has just been adopted by the Wellington Fire Underwriters Association. It embraces all towns and country districts as far as the Bangitikei river on the western side, and the boundary of the Wellington Provincial District on the eastern side, and will apply to all new policies and renewals on and after the Ist of Julj next. The following are the principal features of the new tariff as differing from the old one :• — All the rates under all classes are shown as for buildings with slate, tile, or metal roofs, and 5s per cent, is added if the roofs are shingles or wood in part or whole. This will make the premiums on shops, stores, hotels, &c, with iron roofs, about the same as formerly, except as they may be affected by attachments. The 100 feet detachment has been abolished, and the lowest rate is now for buildings detaohed not leas than 40 feet. In this connection another important change has been made by the words *' in the occupation of other persons" having been struck out, so that " all other buildings" though they be in the occupation of the insured will affect the detachment. This provision will in many cases have the effect of raising the premium. In the case of stables, barns, granaries, woolsheds, and ail farm buildings under class A, 5s per cent, has been added to the rates ; and all dwellings within 40 feet of such buildings are charged 2s 6d per cent! m addition to the rates for dwellings. A new clause for measurement has been added, and the distances between buildings are now to be taken from the nearest point, such as chimney, eaves, verandah, &c, instead of from the main building merely. Another important change as regards detachment is, that dwellings and all buildings classed A will be charged as for B if within 40 feet of those classed G and D, instead of 20 feet as formerly. This again will in many instances mean an increased rate. Several new descriptions of risks have been classified, and the following alterations iv the classifications have been made: — (1) bakehouses, class C, and 5s added; (2) fellmongera (not tannars) and woolscourers, are now raised from B to C ; (3) tanneries, from B to G, with 5s added ; (4) municipal offices and chambers, and buildings used exclusively as offices are changed from A to B ; (5) in the case of Public Halls used for entertainments, without scenery, 10s has been added to the forme? rate; (6) saw mills and sash and door factories, from being classed D as formerly, will now have a spdcial minimum rate of 140s, a heavy one certainly for these important colonial industries. We observe that the explosive nature of the fine dust of flour mills is recognised, and a warranty in each case is to be given that naked lights be not used.
