Jealousy

Nev. ZealandjjsodsrJSß ia becoming an importanVrival to the Tasmanian ■4«iryfarmers, if we may form an opinion from the following advertisement which appeared in the Launceston Examiner of the 2nd instant : — "The public are cautioned against buying or eating New Zealand butter, as disease has been prevalent amongst cows for some time in that colony." It goes without saying that the person who put in the advertisement must have been perfectly conscious he was the author of a deliberate lie, but that is a small matter when " trade" is concerned. All the advertiser wanted was to keep out a persistent rival in order that his profits might not be lessened or divided. It seems to be the fate of New Zealand, at the present time, to be the best abused place in the world. We put it down to jealousy, and at the same time a desire on the part of the neighboring colonies to exalt themselves, in outside public opinion, at our expense. We can quite understand the feeling of hatred which must obtain in many parts of Australia where water does not run, or green grass grow, for nine months in the year, towards this country where bright springs flow in abundance, and the whole surface of the la»d is a brighi and refreshing emerald from years end to years end. fJSince the above was written we have have learned from the New Zealand Times, with reference to the statements recently made in a Tasmanian newspaper with a view to warning people against eating New Zealand butter on the ground that cows in this colony were diseased, Sir Habby Atkinson has telegraphed to the Premier of Tasmania, asking him to deny *he statements, and stating that they are absolutely untrue. 1
