1 Hawrba, tune 13. la the District Court this morning the Eor. Gr. Wilks, head schoolmaster, Manaia, was fined £10 and costs £11 14s for assault and battery on E. G. Allsworth, commission agent at Manaia. The ease was heard before District Judge Raws«n without a jury. Gisbobne, This Day. A young man named Evans bad a narrow escape from being killed this morning. He was opening a large safe at Connor, Shelton, and Co.'s office with a lighted match in his hand, when an ex« plosion of gas occurred and he was thrown heavily across the room and severely burned about the face. Tae gas jet hi the safe had not been turned off at night and the explosion was thus caused.

A petition against the totalizator was forwarded to Mr Perceval at Wellington to»day for presentation to the House. It bears 4000 signatures.

Hehei Bapihana was sentenced at the Supreme Court to twelve months' hard labor and 25 strokes of the cat for in* decent asault.
The Industrial Association have agreed to a resolution affirming that the tariff proposals of the Government are beneficial to the pubho at large.
