The Feilding Library
It will be seen from the report of the Library Committee as published elsewhere, that the finances of that institution are in a very bad way. After six years working it is in debt £66 lls 4d. The report informs us that this deficit would have been less if the Government subsidies had not been stopped, but it fails to state why no efforts were made by the Managing Committee to provide for the amount they were thus deprived of, by other means. The present expenditure is now £8 per annum beyond revenue. The Council did not determine absolutely to shut up the reading room, but allowed the consideration of the report to be held over until next meeting. The Councillors were in some measure induced to do this by a list of names being laid on the table, of persons willing to subscribe at the rate of one shilling per quarter each, towards defraying the cost of keeping open the reading room. Should each one fulfil his engagement a deficiency will no longer exist at the end of the year. We hope the public will actively join in this, and give loyaT support to the new Library Cojomittee which, we understand, the Council will invite them to form among those most likely to best appreciate the benefits arising from so excellent an institution.
