To»day's New Zealand Times says ;— It is perhaps not surprising that a wide difference of opinion prevails as to the Budget proposals. These seem to find more favour generally with the Opposition than with the Ministerialists. Some of the latter indeed denounce the new tariff in unmeasured terms, but the prevalent view appears to be that if Minis* ters can prove that the additional revenue is really required after all possible economies have been effected, then it must be voted. Some of the Opposition members cordially approve the tariff, but would have liked to see a progressive land-tax substituted for some of the items. Others again while approving the principle on which the tariff has been framed, object to it as excessive in its severiiy. The majority, however, frankly say that they have not yet had time to .•tudy the proposals in all their bearings. The preponderance of opimm is appar t htly to the effect- that the proposals will Le adopted with some modification*.
