Wellington Markets

Wellington, May 19. George Thomas and Co. report produce prices as follows: — Advices just received from Sydney give tidings of a sharp rise having taken place in salt butter, : and quote best New Zealand at Is to Is Id, duty Id. This is caused by the somewhat protracted drought in illawarra and other farm- ! ing districts, and this intelligence will prove cheering to large holders, and cause an outlet for accumulated stocks ■ as there is every reason to predict the present rise a permanent one. Other descriptions of grain, &c, are on the the same lines as our last quotations, ' which we repeat:— Flour, roller, £9 to £9 10s; some £8 10s to £8 15s; pollard, £4 ; bran, £3 10s; wheatmeal £8 10s ; good short milling oats, 2s to 2s Id per bushel, Danish and Tartarian, Is lOd to Is lid ; oatmeal, £9 to £9 ss; feed barley, 2s 9d; pearl barley, 225 ; maize, 3s 9d ; beans, 3s 6d ; peas 3s 6d to 4s ; split ditto 18s ; Derwent potatoes, £2 10s to £2 15s ; onions, £4 10s; rye grass seed (Poverty Bay) 3s 6d to ss ; Italian ditto, 3s 6d ; cocksfoot, 3sd to 4d; cheese 4d to 4£d ; hams and bacon 7£d ; fresh butter advanced to Bd, salt ditto, advanced to 7£d ; eggs Is lOd. Prices for poultry are unsatisfactory, and ruled as follows : — Fowls, 2s 6d ; ducks, 38 6d : geese, 6s ; turkeys, 7s per pair. The fruit market is greatly over-stocked with bananas, apples, oranges, &c, and as the wet weather militates against a large volume of business, being transacted, ruling values are on the lowest trade.
