There was a a slight shock of earthquake felt here yesterday morning at 8.15. It was also felt at* Cbristchurch, Nelson, Patea, New Plymouth, and Wellington.
Mr Shearer, manager for Messrs Eade and Venn, has lately been turning out some beautiful pieces of workmanship in the shape of Jubilee tables. The tops aro made ol* birds-eye totara knot very prettily patterned. The legs are of heart of rimu and the borders of rewa rewa.
The services of four or five of the members of our local Fire Brigade were called into requisition this afternoon. A chimney in one of the tallest buildings in the town was on fire, and in a few minutes th > gallant firemen got a ladder, mounted the roof, and in a short time succeeded in putting the fire out.
At a meeting of timber trade representatives at Napier it was decided to adhere to the following tariff of prices for deli* very at the Spit, cash within a month and bank discount added to bills :— Heart- of totara, 15s per hundred; heart of matai, 10s ed ; white pine, 6s ; rimu and mixed totara. 6s 9J ; rusticating, 2s>6d extra ; and other milling, 2s extra.
Mr Henry, the Feilding agent ©f the Auckland Observer, has forwarded us a copy of that journal in its new and enlarged form. Owing to the demise of the ** Bell" the crisp and interesting reading matter for which that paper was so distinguished, now appears in the Observer, and consequently adds largely to its value as a popular exponent of liberal views.

We are informed by Mr Staite that Mr Lyne, plaintiff in the late action v. the Kiwitea Road Board, has given notice of, his intention to move for a new trial on the grounds of misdirection by the judge, and that the verdict was against the weight of the evidence. The application will be made at the sittings of the District Court to be held at Palmerston North on the 30th instant.
The purchasing public (especially those who pay cash) will be pleased to learn that S. J. Thompson, of the Red House is now marking off his first autumn and winter importations of drapery . The extent and variety has. never been greater than at present at the Red House. It ever has and always will be the aim of the proprietor to make the Red House the cheapest Warehouse in Feilding. — Advt.

Frozen meat — Mutton —Market steady; quotations unchanged since last telegram. Lamb — Market quiet; New Zealand carcases are worth s£d per lb.
Mr Turnbull has discovered there are £5,000,000 of money lying in the banks untouched by the property tax. We may inform those most interested that as the average of balances in credit in the several banks is far under £500, Mr Turnbull's implied thveat is mere empty sound. If the honorable gentleman does want to collect a tax on banking accounts let him have one levied on overdrafts then "he would see what he would see."
The following is the method by which to ascertain the weight of hay : — Measure the length and breadth of the stack, then its height to the eaves, add to this last one-third or one-half (according to the pitch) the height from the eaves to the ridge at the top. Multiply the length by the breadth, and the product by the height expressed m feet ; divide the amount by 27 in order to find the cubic yards ; multiply these by 132 with new hay, 176 with old hay, to bring it into pounds; divide the result by 112 to find the number of hundred weights, twenty of which go to each ton.
The member for Akaroa has exhibited in the House by tilting against Mr Baddeley's actions and decissions as 8.M., in Auckland. Now as Akaroa is in the South Island his ingenuous conduct was likely to excite the admiration and gratitude of the Auckland people if " Mercutio," in the Auckland Weekly News, had not explained that owing to various little difficulties Mr McGregor had formerly to make his how " not once, but often" before, Mr Baideley on the bench. We believe members have to take some oath on taking their seats, and it will be asked — What has that to do with it P We think so too.
It is with deep regret that we have to record the death of Mr W. M. Bannatyne, of the firm of Bannatyne and Co., a very old resident aud much- respected former resident of this city. Mr Bannatyne died on Thursday last at nis London, residence, and the news arrived by telegraph on Saturday. He was 71 years of age. His death did not result from the disease which has been alleged as its cause, but was due to a general breaking up. Mr Bannatyue originally settled m Wellington 45 years ago. He long represented Thorndon Ward m the Uity Council, and was in every way a good and useful citizen.— N.Z. Times.
On our third page we publish the programme of the concert to take place on Thursday next under the auspices of the Feilding Volunteer Fire Brigade. It will be seen that amongst those who will take part are the names of some established favorites, while some ''new blood" will also be introduced. In fact one or two young artistes will lor the first time in their lives make their obeisance to a public audience, and from what we learn there is no fear that these debutants will acquit themselves satisfactorily. It speaks well for the great popularity of the entertainment that uot one person who has been ask< d to contribute to theprogramme. has declined to render his or her services, while seyeral wbo have hitherto positively refused to appear in publio, have apparently made the Fire Brigade concert an exception, and grunted the committee their willing assistance. Th i programme is not quite complete an regards the titles of songs, &c, but will be revised in tomorrow's issue, and filled up as far as possible. Mis Wo ship the Mayor has kindly promised to preside at the entertainment, and we have not much doubt bf its having a large pati onage.
