Feilding State School

HOUSEHOLDERS' MEETING.

The adjourned annual meeting of householders for the purpose of receiving the report of the retiring committee, and electiug a committee for the ensuing year was held in the school-house oh Saturday evening. There was not a large attendance, but those present were fairly representative of the inhabitants, and manifested a' warm interest in the business of the meeting. Mr J. 0. Thompson was voted to the chair, and after reading the Education Board's notice calling the meeting, he invited the Chairman of the retiring committee, Mr Watts, to read the report and balance sheet, which were as follows :'— REPORT. The Committee have much pleasure in reporting that during the year the school has been worked in a satisfactory manner, although there haye been changes in the teaching staff, which acted for a time against the working, but at present we bave an efficient staff of teachers in the school, which we hope will show good results at the next examination, and it is to be hoped chat the parents will assist by sending their children regularly. The attendance during the year has been very fair, but we feel sure there are a great many children often absent]; also during the first quarter of the year the hop-picking spoils the attendance, although on the whole it has improved, as is shown by the following report — On Roll Attendance January to March .. 314 213 April to June .7 311 218 July to September . . 312 242 Octob'rtoDecem'r.. 304 220

Tbe school was examined in September when 296 children were examined, giving a per centage of 73*1, which is an increase on former years, and shows the school to be in a satisfactory state. We have pleasure in reporting the school buddmgs and grounds to be in good order and repair, with the exception of roofs of residence and old part of school, on which the shingles are decayed and blow off, which will cause leakages as sool as the wet weather sets in. The Committee have applied to the Board to cover roof of residence with iron, but tbey being out of funds were unable to undertake the work. W, Watts, Chairman.

Taylor was also nominated, but through some error on the part of a voter the voting for this candidate was rendered informal. The Chairman declared the following gentleman duly elected :— Messrs J. C. Thompson, H. Worsfold, Watts, Reading Ranger, Curtis, and Fairfield Thompson. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.

.After the public meeting the committee met for the purpose of electing officers.

Messrs Watts and Worsfold, the Chairman and Secretary respectively of the former committee, were unanimously re-elected. It was resolved to hold the regular meetings on the last Friday in each month, the first meeting to be on Friday next. Mr F. Thompson brought forward the question of using some means to prevent scholars suffering from infectious complaints attending school, and thereby endangering the health of the rest of the pupils. He thought it a pity that the school should be closed, as had been the case in some other places, simply because one or two children were suffering from some infection. : The Chairman read the clause in the Educatiou Act which empowers teachers to exclude from the school any scholars who may be suffering as mentioned. It was understood the matter would be further discussed at the next meeting. The Committee then adjourned.
