The Government have accepted two local tenders for the construction of fifty locomotives, the cost heing £3000 each.
The directors of the Broken Hill Maritoto Mine, Auckland, intend to re turn the whole of the money subscribed here for shares. They are determined to prosecute the strictest, inquiries for tho purpose of ascertaining who are responsible for the attempted fraud which has been exposed l»y the recent assay of stone from the mine.

The lad Spragg, who daring a quarrel killed another boy named Croinpton lias been committed for trial for. manslaughter.
John Tait, tbe welbknowing sporting gentleman, dropped down dead to-day. The evidence as to the cause -of death of Mr Gillot, who died in a restaurant recently under somewhat suspicious circumstance, reveals the fact that the deceased had made a will leaving the sum of £3000 to Mrs Spraum, the proprietress, who subsequently poisoned Gillott by administering water accidulated by drops of glacical acetic acid, which Spraum admits that she gave by accident as medicine- A verdict of wilful murder was returned against Mrs Spraum. Kemp declares that he willing to meet Teemer on tbe Parramatta River, but states that so far he has not received any communication from Teemer, and that nothing can be done until a challenge has been received- Hanlan states that he was commissioned to back Teemer against Kemp oa the Nen pean River. Burnt an r, May 21. A settler named Kirkham has given his son, aged 19, into custody on the charge of murdering a girl named Jellev, who it is alleged, had first been outraged. It is said that the youth was in company of the youug lady on the afternoon when she was discovered murdered. Melboubne, May 19. At a largely attended meeting tosday of those interested in the soft goods trade, resolutions protesting against any increase iv the tariff were carried, as il was considered that such increase would be detrimental to commerce. The Babbit Commission will visit the Tintinallogy run, on the River Darling, as to thoroughly investigate the disease discovered by Drs Butcher and Ellis. May 21 The placihg of exhibits in the various courts of the Exhibition is being pro* ceeded with, and already 250 exhibits received from New Zealand have been placed in space allotted to that Colony.
