WE BID FAREWELL.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAK.

Sir, — "Will you kindly allow me, on behalf of the firm I represent, a small space in your valuable journal, to thank the good people of this district for the generous support accorded us during our seven week's stay in your pleasant township. We have made many friends, and it is satisfactory to know that our efforts to supply them with good articles at a low price, for cash, have been fully appreciated, our anticipations having been more than realised. To our friends far and near we say "good bye" till we meet again. We thank the Feilding Early Closing Association for the enjoyment of free evenings, and we should fail in our duty were we to omit to acknowledge the generous support accorded us by Messrs Thompson, Donkin, and Brown in that stirring protest entered by them on behalf of their fellow tradesmen ■against such as we venturing to tread upon their ground. No doubt, to use a vulgarism, they meant to squash us right off ; but Mr Editor, their action had the very opposite effect, so for this reason we have to thank those gentlemen for their unintended kindness, and beg to express the hope that should we visit this part again on business they will be here to blow another blast in our favor. How often in life one is led to moralise on the inconsistency of human nature (you and I exceptsd, of course, Mr Editor), but would you believe, if report be true, that one of these gentleman is holding a " cheap sale" in one of the neighboring towns, forgetful perhaps that only recently he vigorously protested against our doing the very same thing; but don't suppose for one moment Mr Editor that he is to be blamed for it, we would rather sympathise with him in his effort to benefit the country at large. My omly object in mentioning the matter is to show now much alike the brotherhood are after all, and that we should be charitable towards each other. Our visit, we think, has demonstrated to the public the superiority of cash, trading, and we have further proved to Messrs Thompson, Donkin, and Brown that giving credit does not necessarily mean a monoply of trade. Were traders, contractors, laborers, and others to demand and insist upon cash being paid for their services, their earnings would be worth from 10 to 15 per cent, more than they are at present, and we hope the day will soon come when they will see the philosophy of this. In conclusion, and in justice to Mr J. 0. Thompson, who has been, so unworthily denounced for letting jbis late premises to so-called "itinerant dealers," let me say that as regards

ourselves he had nothing whatever lo *"~i3o with our coming here, and as a matter of fact he advised us not to come, as he th mght the venture would be risky. Our arrangements were made with the then tenant, and had we been aware that Glasgow House was available we should certainly have established ourselves there for the term. The reference to Mr J. C. Thompson's rights in dealing with hi& property can only be looked upon as a piece of impertinence, and was manifestly unjust. Without trespasamg fttrther upon your Bpace, we again thank our friends for their hearty support, and bid them all farewelL— l am, &c, G. B. Class.. Glasgow House, May 18. l\
