School Committee
Another opportunity will be given the householders of Feilding cm next Saturday evening of electing a School Committee. We have already written strongly on this subject, but think it is of too much iaaportance to be allowed to go by default when a few timely words from us may tend to awaken heads of families to a sense of their position and responsibilities. /The fact of the small amount of money now at the disposal of Committees is made an excuse for apathy by many unthinking individuals. Instead of that being an apology for any negligence, it ought rather to be an incentive to them to render all ftie assistance in their power to make the revenue go as far as possible so a 8 to secure the maximum of good. Even if the grant were swept away altogether parents would expect their children to get free education just the same as when the Government were in a position to be more liberal. Should the day come when school foes will be charged people will begin to regret they did not, when the opportunity was given them tike better advantage of it. That there is every possibility of a radical change in the system is indicated by Mr Steward's Educational Franchise Bill, which was circulated in the House on Friday evening. By it the term "householder" is made to mean and include every person whose name apI peors on the Electoral Roll for the General Assembly for the time being in force and who resides within the limits of the School District, and the parents or guardians of all children attending the school. The Education Board is to call for nominations from householders for election on School Committees, these to he sent in in writing on or before the third Monday in April. Directions for the proceedings at elections follow, and the voting is confined to one vote for each candidate. We hope to see on Saturday night a full attendance at the ' aenool-house.
