Mr J, Dillon, M.P. for Mayo East has been sentenced to six months' imprison* ment with hard labor on a charge of having advocated the Plan of Campaign in addressing a meeting at Dundalk. County Louth, Mr Dillon gave notice of appeal. A cargo of Australian wheat has been sold at 33s 6d.
It is stated that the relations between Lord Wolselejr and the Duke or Cambridge and Mr L. Stanhope are seriously strained.
The Imperial Defence Bill, which has just been circulated, provides for the authorities expending the sum of £850,000 in building and arming a squadron for the Australian vfaters, the colo« niea repaying the am -unt at the end of twelve years with three perc ent interest; The Bill provides also for expending the sum of L 2,6 '"0,000 for the defence of ports and coaling stations, the interest on which will be payable out of the Suez Canal dividends.
In the House of Commons the Marquis of Salisbury, in speaking on the question of defences of the country, censured Lord W o ' s el e y f° r the speeches he had delivered on the Army, "and which were likely to hare caused a panic. The Times endorses the Premier's remaiks.
The Daily Telegraph, in the course of an article on the defences of Great Britain, states the Army is endangered through not being armed with better weapons. It mentions that the weapons now in use are worst in the world,, and not the modern breechloader. It asserts that all along the line of coastal defence the war-ships are practically without guns and ammunition, and the equipment is both deficient and defective. It is reported that Sir W. F. D- Jervois, Governor of New Zealand, is likely to be re«appointed for another term. The Australians won the match against Warwickshire by one innings and 150 runs. The Warwickshire team, in their first innings, made 67. and in their second innings, 129.

His Holiness the Pope objects to Mr Parnell's comments on the decree, and states that it is his duty to the Church to warn the people of the immoral methods adopted by the .National League in defiance to the law. The decree will be read a second time in the Irish churches on Sunday.

During a military review at Zarskoe* Selo, a town 17 miles south of here, Lieutenant Timofieff fired a revolver at the Czar, but the shot did not take effect. The Lieutenant was immediately arrested.

Severe fighting has taken place on the Afghan frontier between the Ameer's troops and the rebels. The Ameer restrained the .Iherassed tribe from seeking Russian protection, and General Alakanoff has been despatched to assist the Aherasseds.
