The Chinese residents at Balla a have resolved to co-operate with their brethren in Melbourne in their appeal to the Chinese Government, for as* sistance in the present difficulty. The Wesleyan Conferences opened to-day. The principal questions for discussion are the Tongan difficulty, ' and the desire of the New Zealand church for a separate; conference. A. number of representatives from the latter church present. Bbisbakb, May 8. Miss May Polland, a member of Williamson, Garner, and Musgrove's opera company, is seriously ill from having taken an overdose of eucalptus oil. She is, however, expected to recover.

Adelaide, This Day. The Government do not intend to stop the manufacture of opium in the northern territory, as it would only be the means of increasing the profits of Chinese merchants.
The Government suggested an Intercolonial conference be held to discuss the Chinese question. Advices hare been greceivod from Mauritius to the effect that the sugar crop is one of the best for many years past. Holders have reduced their prices by a few cents as against last month's quotations.
