A Kanaka has bern murdered at Mackay, and three of the deceased's countrymen have been arrested on sush picion of having committed the deed. A French transport has arrived at Cook town with 248 French convicts on board for New Caledonia. Sydney, May 8. A deputation consisting of Chinese residents waited on the Premier to-day, and pointed out the unfairness of the Government in not allowing t© land those who had left China, believing that by paying a certain sum they would be permitted to go ashore. The Premier replied that those whose naturalisation papers were found to be genuine would be allowed to land.
Th« sentence of death passed on Merrit has been commuted to imprisonment for 14 years.
A distressing shooting fatality is re« ported from ths Mudgce district. A party of sportsmen were out after game when one was shot, owing to the accidental discharge of his gun. His companion started off for assistance, and on their return found that the wounded man had blown his brains out, apparently to alleviate his suffering.
