Manchester Road Board
TO THB EDITOR OF THK STAR. Sir,— Might I inform Mr G. Revingtou Jones (in answer to his letter iri your last issue) that there are settlers living in tbe upper portion of No. •5 Ward who did not receive terms with their land, but paid cash for it after the bridge and main roads had been made by the E. and C.A. Corporation. Others, again, have purchased at second hand, and paid an enhanced value ou account of the bridge and road, which I think is what " Upper Taonui" means ; that '.'.Upper Taowu's" road is not being paid for by the whole of the ratepayers in No. 5 ward ; that the money borrowed under the " Roads arid Bridges Construction Act," to whioh Mr Jones evidently refers, was «peut in opening up new portions of the ward on which there wae no settlement; that the whole- of the ripper portion of the ward (the unsold land included) has been rated according to valuation, the same as the lower part, and that none of the money so paid as general rates has ever been spent on new works in the upper portion pf the ward (except a short piece of formation lately). I mention these matters because I am aware the settlers in the lower part of the ward are under the impression that they nave a grievance, whereas in reality they have not, for if we take into consideration the roads made under the '«• Roads and Bridges Construction Act" iri this ward, the length will not then exceed the metalled portion of the Aorangi, Bunnythorpe, Nannestead's, and metalled portion of the Bunnythorpe-Ashhuret roads which have been made and paid for out of the general rates. I may mention, in conclusion, that I am not writing this with any intention of interfering with the main question at issue, but merely as a correction of errors in Mr Jones' letter. — I am, fto., Owen Plbasamts.
