LARGEST GATHERING EVER SEEN IN H.B. [ PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION, j Napier, April 20. To-day the funeral of Renata Kawepo at Omahu, 13 miles from town, attracted the largest attendance ever seen in Hawke's Bay, fully 6000 persons being present, the Europeans predominating. Beveral hundred Volunteers took part, the funeral being a military one in recognition of Renata's loyal service during the Maori wars. Tbe Hon Mr Mitchelson was present, and was approached on the subject of native- legislation. He was asked to repeal the Native Land Administration Act; to establish freeholds in native lands, with certain restrictions ; to prevent natives, from impoverishing themselves; to exercise more control in appointing to Native Land Courts Judgeeoonversant with Maori customs ; and to allow natives in each district to appoint their own assessors. In reply, the* Minister sketched broadly the intentions of the Government, and his explanations appeared to give aatiqfa C - tion.
