Volunteers
Only three more recruits will be taken by the Manchester Rifles. Several promotions among the noncommissioned officers will appear in the Order Book on 27th. instant.
The new rifle for the British army has three advantages over the MartiniHenry. The cartridge is more easily extracted when grains of sand, or any obstacle, get into the breech action. (2) The cartridge is lighter. (8) There is less recoil with the new rifle. It has been decided in the case of repeating rifles that the magazine be detachable from the rifle, so that for long distance firing the single action may be brought into play. The next meeting of the N.Z.R.A.. will be held at Riverlands, the property of Mr Charles Bed wood, which is about five miles from Blenheim. A parade of the Manchester Rifles will be ordered for May 24th, at 10 a.m , the Queen's birthday, when a feudejoie will be fired. All membtw of the corps who desire new rifles can obtain them after parade on the 27th instant. The F troop, Ist regiment of N.Z. cavalry will hoid their encampment at Bulls during the weekending the 28th instant. On the last day a tournament will be held under the patronage of Lieutenant -Colonels Stapp and Noake. •
