A ten* roomed unoccupied house wae destroyed by fire at 1 o'clock this morn ing. It was owned by Sir William Foj and insured for L6OU in the South British. An elderly m*n named Bichard Hogarth met witk a painful accident on the tramway on Saturday evening. Ac the tram was turning the coroner the man fell off the car and one of his arms waa seriously injured by the wheels, the flesh being torn off from the elbow to the wrist. This Day. The Manposa with the English mail of 24th Maroh left San Francisco on the Bth of April, three days late. The Zealandia, with colonial mails of 26th Maroh, arrived from San Francisco on the 14th of Apnl, a day early. Wbstpobt, Apnl 16. A young man named McCabe aeciden* tally shot himself yesterday afternoon on the Boiler road near Cronadun. Hewaa out shootinjr. and when crossing a fence his gun went off, the contents entering his side. He died immediately. Gbbyhouth, Apnl 16. At the cattle sale this afternoon beef fetched 17s per cwt and mutton 14s. There was a small supply. Mr Jos. Payne, for many years County Clerk for the Grey County, was found dead at his private residence this morning sitting in • chair by the fire. The supposed cause of death is apoplexy .[ Dunedif, Apnl 16. The local option poll for Dunedin district took place to-day and resulted in a very large majority against any increase of licenses. A two-year«old child of Mr Foster, of Owaiti, has been poitaned by laudanum, given by mistake by an elder brother. A young man named Simpson fell from a scaffolding 25 feet high, at St. Mary's Church, Parnell, and fractured his skull. His recovery is hopeless. Archbishop Redwood moved thnt the remedy far the ills which Ireland suffers from will he fonnd in granting &ome J&ul« to that country.
