A Dismal Outlook

THE BUNNYTHOBPE-AORANGI BOAD. [COMMUKIOATED.] The Manchester Road Board ai their meeting on Saturday last voted £20 to be expended in making the culvert* on the above road passable for the winter, provided that a similai amount be granted bj the Manawatu Road Board. A deputation of rate, payers, consisting of Messrs Charles Bull James Bull, W. L. Bailey, and Levington Jones waited on that Board at their meeting in Palmeraton on Monday on the subject. Having represented that during the winter months the road would be wholly impassable if the necessary repairs of the culverts were not now made, and elicited the fact that during the period of office of the Engineer to the Board— -some seven years— the expenditure on this road amounted to £21 «■. The Board, while expressing their entire sympathy with the ratepayers, found themselves wholly unable to grant the request of the deputation. As the rate far the year was to be struck by this meeting of the Board, the deputation urged that their combined rates, which would be sufficient for the purpose in view, be voted them. This was also refused, whereupon several members of the deputation stated they would pay no more rates to the Manawatu Boad Board. The proposed secession of the district interested in the road cannot take place too soon. As the sum voted by the Manchester Boad Board is thus lost, and it is impossible that any ot' the loan about to be negotiated can he expended this season, the residents of the district 'along the line are not to be congratulated on the prospect for the winter.
