During the discussion on tias resolution 3£r Bull stated a meeting had been held At Taonui School-house, at which about | thirty ratepayers were present. It had been found that the special rate on the portion of the Mariawatu Boad Distriot 5n the south side of the Railway Line, ■would be 2M in the £, and the meeting •considered it would be better to join, the uortion affected on to the Manchester District, and strike one special rate over that portion and No. 5 ward for the bridge and other works proposed. The xate proposed at the last poll was % of It on No. 5 ward. Under the new proposal it would be iof Id more. The petition to join the southern portion of the ManAwatu Boad Board on to the Manchester JDistnct would require two-thirds of the signatures of the whole of the ratepayers jn the Manchester Boad Board, and twothuds of the ratepayers in the portion of the Manawatu District proposed to be joined. There were eighteen ratepayers In this latter district and there would be no difficulty in obtaining the signatures -of two-thirds of them. It was pointed out that there would be igreat. difficulty in obtaining the signatures of the required number in the Mantester Boad District, to whom the advantages of the object of the petition would not be quite so obvious. The '.expense was roughly, estimated at £30 to JI4O, unlessit were taken round by unpaid volunteers. Mr Lethbridge undertook to do a share, And- Mr Bull the same. Mr Tremewan, speaking as a ratepayer ■of No. 5 ward, said he was sure it would aiot be signed about Bunnythorpe, unless ;■ 3>y very few. He would vote against the anoney being spent in obtaining signaiures. ... Mr Bull suggested if the petition were successful that the new district be made a separate ward, and bear the expense of the petition. ..." Some fear was expressed there would Jbe a lot of liabilities to take over in the ;Bhapeof the new district's share of special anted, overdrafts, &c, &c, of the MahaBoad District.
