Burning of the Oporto Theatre

Particulars of the fire at t£e Oporto Theatre show that the outbreak originated through an explosion of gas in the last act of the piece that was being performed. The doors from the upper boxes and gallery became blocked by a Tush of men, who drew their, knives and fought for egress. Some of those who escaped had their clothes completely torn off, and were covered with wounds. About twenty persons were trampled to death in the stampede; several were killed by. jumping from, the windows, and seventy suffocated and calcined bodies were afterward found in the debris.
