How New Zealand is Slandered
The following paragraph is triumphantly flaunted by a Protectionist contemporary : —
•'A correspondent writing from Melbourne to the Eyening Press says : — The influx of New Zealanders into Melbourne still continues. The Tarawera had a full saloon and! 15 steerage, nearly all young, energetic, and able men, who have come here determined to try their fortunes. They are a loss to New Zealand, and a decided acquisition to Victoria. A similar complement arrives weekly. How oonolusively Protectionist Victoria has smashed the Freetrade dogma."
When we get the bard facts, as stated by the Kegistrar-G-oneral, we find the
Melbourne correspondent oi the Evening Press " said the thing which is not." The Registrar says :— ' " The departures from the colony last , month were 1486, and the arrivals only ' 1293. Victoria took 690, and New South j Wales 563 of our population, and gave us back 331 and 356 respectively." I This is a sufficient comment. I
