(Notes by " Maxim."

The handicaps for the FeUding Races appeared on Thursday. The acceptances and general entries close on Thursday next. Although the horses are a very ordinary lot, with the exceptioH of Tongariro, I think the handicaps could be greatly improved on. In the Hurdles Germaine is in her place at the top of the list, but I think she should have had not more than 10s 12lb. Orlando, lOst 10lb, is badly treated, as he is meeting Germaine on 6lbs better than when they met in Wanganui, and I am sure she gave him a 101 bs beating. He ie also asked to meet Waitangi on 24lbs worse than when they met at Foxton, where Orlando won. Waitangi, lOst 71h, holds them loth safe, if well on the day of meeting. I do'nt think Satan could win if he had Bst 71b. In the Feilding Handicap Tongariro heads the list with 9st. He has never won a two mile race yet, and he is meeting Germaine on 4lbs worse terms than when they met at Foxton, and the distance was a quarter of a mile shorter. So, according to that running, Germaine holds him safe. "Waterfall, at Bst, is certainly badly treated, as he is only a three-year-old, and his best performance was getting third in the Wanganui Derby. lam afraid his name won't be in the ac% ceptance list on Thursday. Germaine, 7st 101 b, seems to me positively the pick of the handicap, and she certainly should not have had a pound less than Bst 41b. She won the Foxton Handicap with 7st 1010, and the Falmerston Guineas with 7st 61b, beating such good performers as Strenuous, Shah, and Orwell. Goth, 6st 101 b, is the best treated of the remainder, and if he would only go straight I should look no further for the winner. In the Winter Oats and Stewards' Stakes I like nothing better than Tongariro, if he starts, with Orlando next best. Mr Evett was certainly a bit rough on Sincerity in asking her to give weight to Orlando, Partner, Spray, and Goth. I will not commit myself to a more definite opinion at present, as the acceptances close on Thursday, and I am afraid the total number of acceptors in the four races handicapped won't amount to twenty, but it is to be hoped that I will be in the wrong. I expect to see very large entries for the Maiden and the Hack races. If the acceptances are small, I would suggest to the Club to add a Handicap Hack Bace, of 208OV8, three-quarters of a mile, to the programme, and lam sure it would produce a field of not less than twenty. AtSandon on Saturday they had -22 nominations for their Flying Handicap, and.it was only 88OV8. ; : I notice by the : Referee of the 16th instant. that Mr W. K Keith's nomination of Dudu for the New Zealand Cup has been rejected, owing to his being posted as a defaulter by the Tattersalls Club. .

The Sandon Hack »aces came off ! j^Jast Saturday on their new course, . which was anything but a first class ; one, and it was owing to a largo hoi- - low on one .part of jt that I have to ' chronicle a most painful disaster, sim- ' ilar to the Caulfield Cup disaster, in '. the Flying Handicap, in which 16 ■ horses started. After they had gone , half the distance Songster, Pearl, Zo-. : diac, Ngrau, Eustic, aud The Owl was seen to fail. McKenzie,. the rider of Eustic, and Colletto, the rider of Ngaru, were both severely injured, and McKenzie, who was in the employ of Mr Bell, of Feilding, has since died. Hall, the rider of Songster, had his arm and two ribs broken. The wea- ' ther was beautiful, . and about 500 persons were present, Mr Abraham put £901 through his totalisator. A sensational dividend was paid on Sir Garnet^ only one being on him, and he received £89. The following are the results:— . Hurdle Handicap. — Doctor, 1 ; Ng-atoto, 2.
