THE EMPEROR OF GERMANY DEAD. Berlin, March 8. At ten minutes past five this evening the Emperor was gettting perceptibly weaker, and the official bulletin just . issued states that the worst fears are entertained for his recovery. In consequence of the announcement contained in the official bulletin referring to the condition of the Emperor Wilhelm all the theatres were ordered, to be closed, aud great consternation prevails in the city. At five minutes past six His Imperial Highness passed away. London, March 8. Information from Berlin states that the Emperor Wilhelm passed a very restless night on Wednesday. He was very weak, and received the Church rites at 12.30, and at 1 a.m. he died. The whole of tbe family were present at the death, except the Crown Prince, who will leava San Remo. for the Capital immediately. The death was kept a secret for some hours. Prince William has been temporarily appointed Regent. The Stock Exchange and Continental Bourses are much depressed, owing to the Emperor's death. March 9, 12.45 a.m. Inquiries made at the German Ambassador's proved that the Emperor wa» not dead, but he was m a prolonged swoon, which had been taken for death. The Foreign Office received a telegram that the Emperor was still alive, but little hope was entertained of his survive ing the morning. The Crown Prince will at once remove to Wiesbaden, in order to prevent the question being raised thai he was not on German soil at the timo of his father's death. There is an impression that the truth of the Emperor's death was concealed, iv order to prevent State complications. The following is from " Men of tho Time":— William, Emperor of Germany, and Ring of Prussia, son of Frederick William TH, and of Princess Louise, Mecklenberg Strelitz, and brother to the late King of Prussia, born March 22, 1797, was educated an a soldier and took part. in the campaigns of 1813 and 1815 against France. Hia brother, Frederick WiUiain.lV, dying without issue, January 2, 1861, he succeeded to the Crown. In 1867 ho became the head of the powerful North German Confederation comprising 22 States, representing a population of 29,000,000. The part played by him in the Franco-Prussian war is already well-known. A second attempt was made on June 2, 1878, when he was wounded in several places. The would-be murderer committed suicide. William I married June 11, 1829, the Princess Augusta, a daughter of the Grand Duke of Weimar. They have two children, the Crown Prince of Prussia, and tho Princess Louise-Mary.
