The foundation stone of a largo sixstorey building to be erected as head offices for the Mutual Life Association of Australasia, wa9 laid to-day. The site chosen is at the corner of George and Wynyard-streets, and is one of the prominent sites in Sydney. Carroll, the man who brained his wife with an axe on Sunday afternoon, and who afterwards cut his throat is alive. At the request on the body of the woman a verdict of murder was returned. At the Coroner' 8 inquest on the body of the jockey Osborne who was stabbed at Warialda oh Saturday, a verdict of murder was returned against Merret. The men were mates, and quarrelled, but no cause is assigned for the dispute and its tragical termination. Reiterated complaints come from Broken Hill township, where there are now nearly 10,000 people, of the neglect on the part of the Government, who are accused of throwing all the trade into Victoria and S uth Australian hands. The streets of. the township are constantly thronged with people, and vast sums of money change kands daily. The Stock Exchanges are conducted in the [open air at street coroners. It is expected that by the end of the year the population will have increased to 20,000, and so good are the prospects of the principal mines that it is asserted that 50 years' work is in sight. The tin mines continue to attract at« tention, and considerable capital is being invested. AfELBOUBNE, March 7. The Russian corvette Rynda sailed for New Zealand. A clergyman who was yesterday conducting the funeral of the actor Frederics, who died at the conclusion of the performance on Saturday night, fainted at the grave. The service was concluded by Charles Warner, the actor. Arrnred — U.S.S. Co.'s s.s. Taupo, from New Hebrides. She brings news to the effect that the Rev Mr Robertson is the only European now living at Eromanga. He is the fourth missionary stationed there, the natives having devoured all his predecessors. Two Chinamen quarrelled at Sandhurst last night. One shot the other and then cut his own throat. Both men j died of the injuries sustained. Bbisbanb, March 7. The Trade Congress last night declared for Protection with few dissenti- j ents. It was declined to formulate an electoral programme, and to declare to give support to any candidate not adueringtto it.; A public anti»Chinese meeting was held last night. A number of prominent citizens were present. Several mem* bers of Parliament demanded that the Chinese should be totally excluded from Australia.
