Several members of the committee of the West Coast Rifle Association visited Balgownie and obtained a splendid range for the forthcoming meeting. We are exceedingly pleased to be able to congratulate Volunteer A Ballinger, of the Wellington City Guards on having won the first prize in the : first match of the New Zealand Kifle Association Meeting this year. Volunteer A. Ballinger is well known as a steady and reliable shot. He holds the Nelson Citizens' Cup, which he won right out in successive years at j Nelson and Dunedin. His brother, W. Ballinger, was Rifle Champion of the colony in 1879. — Post The captain of a city corps has been placed under arrest for alleged in- j subordination at last parade of the Wellington Rifle Battalion. The charge was preferred by the captain I of another company. The Minister of Defence has issued a circular fixing the capitation for the year ending December, 1888. It will be, subject to the vote of Parliament, as follows : — Adult oorps 80s, and cadet corps ss. With reference to the capitation for cadets, it is not probable that it will be continued after the expiration of this year. Regu* lations regarding the minimum strength of corps are to be striotly enforced, and no exception to this rule will under any circumstances be allowed.
