One corps in the North Island will run the Kumara company pretty close in last year's class-firing when the returns are published. Every member won a " marksman's badge. It is understood that either Colonel Mahon or Captain Sommerville will have command of the camp at Oamaru. A telegram from Oamaru states that Major Purnell has been disqualified by the council of the Association from firing in the team match. Major- General Sir George Whitmore left Wellington for Nelson yesterday, in order to make his final inspection of the volunteers in that disSir James Lerimer, the Victorian Minister of Defence, says in the Argus, of 12th January:— "ln Victoria we /.^iiave a plan of operations ready to be f put in force at a moment's notice ri war was declared. We have decided what is to be done at every fort, and on every ship, with every man and every gun."
