The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1888 War News
The chances of a prolonged peace in Europe appear to become more remote j as each day succeeds another. As if there were' not already enough disturbing influences at work, Spam is accredited witi an intention to invade Morocco, which will embroil her with France, while China is said to propose endeavouring to recover Manshooria from Russia. Fledged as England is it will be difficult for her to keep out of the contest, and ill she is compelled to take part, her colonies will hare to look well to their own defences. Should war break out the nations pitted against each other will be Russia and France against Germany, Austria, Italy, Great .Britain, Sweden, Belgium, Spain and Holland. China would occupy bat a secondary position. It will thus be seen the war cloud is hanging over nearly the whole world, and at no time in its history has that cloud looked so surcharged with homan blood. The great nations of the earth have armies assembled far exceeding in number even the fabulous legions of ancient history. Each is armed with weapons of precision which, when brought into action, will make the slaughter terrible, amounting to annihilation of the force opposed to each other. Apart from those slain in actual battle, the deaths of men camps in from disease will be even more numerous and appalling. The sorrow and tribulation wrought on inoffendand unresisting women and children cannot even be imagined in its frightful horrors. The curious thing is that no one seems to know what the nations want to fight about. There is a general idea Russia wants Constantinople and that the other nations, England especially, are determined to prevent such want being gratified. Why the whole — or greater part — of the world should for this season alone be embroiled in war is not at all . clear. The fact appears to be that the nations desire war, and will ouly be too eager to grasp the first reasonable excuse to be at each others throats. , In the coming spring season the matter will be placed beyond doubt. In the mean time we in the colonies should at once take all possible precautions to be ready for an outbreak so that if we are called upon to defend ourselves we will have arms in our hands, and know how to use them.
