• . Thursday, February 22, 1888. (Before fIT. L. Bailey and O. Bull, Esqrs., J.P.s.) OBSCENE LANGUAGE. H. Saunderson was charged that he did on the 6th day of February use certain obscene words in a public place. He pleaded ignorance of the offence. Constable Meehan deposed : On the date named he had seen Sanderson slightly the worse of liquor; advised him to go home; he used the language complained of in a loud tone of voice ; there were a number of women and children about. Cross-examined by Mr Staite, for the defence : The man appeared to be annoyed about something. J. H. Blackmore deposed : He remembered standing at the Library door ; heard - someone call out police ; Constable Meehan came up aad told Saunderson to go home ; heard him use bad language ; it was all the wife's aggravation. Cross-examined : Accused objected to the company his wife was in. By the Bench : Thought there was a scuffle between Saunderson and his wife. By Mr Staite: Saunderson was a quiet inoffensive man. Mr Staite addressed the Bench in extenuation. Sentenced to 12 hours imprisonment and 9s costs.
