The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1888. War News
The intelligence conveyed in the telegrams from St. Petersburg dated Wednesday last, which reached this colony late on Thursday night, is calculated to excite considerable uneasiness in the minds of those who are desirous of seeing a prolonged peace in Europe. We are informed that to facilitate the conveyance of troops, the whole of the freight traffic has been stopped on the railways in Southern Russia. Over half a million of men, with two thousand guns, are already stationed on the western bank of the river Dneiper, and more troops are being despatched to the various stations on the frontier. There has been much alarm excited in Constantinople as it is feared Russia meditates an early seizure of Erzeroum, which is an important Turkish strategic centre in Armenia, being the principal frontier fortress and point of resistance to a Russian advance on Constantinople. Single handed, it is impossible for the Turks to make a sufficient defence. Altogether the news is very disquieting and at a iy moment we may hear of the first shot haviug been fired of what will be one of the most bloody wars of the century. On the other hand, Sir F. Dillon Bell has wired there is a strong feeling in London that peace may be maintained, and it is quite possible there may be reasons for the belief founded on information not at the disposal of the agents of Telegraph Associations.
