Volunteers
Cavalry volunteers will regret to learn that Drill-Instructor Carley has notice chat his services will be dispensed with from the 20th inst. New Sniders have arrived for the Manchester team, but most of the men will stick to the weapons they .are used to when firing at Oamaru. The following circular is to be sent out to West Coast corps in a fe^r •days : — In view of the customary Easter Encampment not taking place this year, it hat> been suggested that a Rifle meeting should be held in on Good Ftiday and Saturday, open to competitors from the whole of the West Coast. This suggestion has been warmly taken up by many of the shooting men in Wan.ganui, and will doubtless be approved by their country confreres. Indeed, the formation of a West Coast Rifle Association is very desirable, not only , 4or the social benefits to be derived from a friendly organisation of this nature, but particularly in the interests of shooting ; and it will be within the reach of the youngest aspirant in the country to attend as a competitor by reason of the cheap holiday excursion fares. An application will be made to the Government Railway authorities to allow volunteers the privilege of travelling free in uniform. Assuming the entrance fees to be 10s €d for membership, and for matches (say 6 matches) at 2s 6d, 15s— per head, £l 5s 6d — it would give the Association if well patronised— that j is in equal ratio with the Wanganui and district — a sum of £60, or say £50 to be allotted in prize money. It is, However, ineumbeat that come idea should be given as to the immter of outside members who will undertake to attend, in order that proper arrangements may be made re targets etc., and also to assist im the framing of a good programme. — Herald. Should this proposal meet general j acceptation on the coast, and there is no doubt it will; there exists a probability Feilding will be selected for a meeting one year owing to the excellence of the range here offering peculiar advantages. It is also probable an encampment might be held at the same time if the finances of the Manchester Rifles were augmented by local contributions to assist in providing for the necessary expenses.
