Opening Of the Callione Dock
J PKB tTBIXED PBESS ABBOCIATION.I Auckland, February 16The Calliope Dock was successfully opened by his Excellency the Governor, Sir William Jervois, in a brief speech, Admiral Fairfax also being present. H.M.S Calliope and Diamond were simultaneously docked. The suburb of Devonport, where the dock Ib situated, was decorated with triumphal arches. The Governor, in replying to the toast of his health, said the construction of th« dock was a matter of historic interest to Auckland, and might render this harbour the centre of a great naval enterprise in these seas. Admiral Fairfax replied to the toast of the British Navy, and said he would have great pleasure in reporting to the Admiralty that Auckland possessed a dock capable of docking war vessels, where they would also be safe in time of war, owing to the forts and torpedo service. The Admiralty had recently sent out the Egeria, the largest of the survey vessels, for the purpose of surveying the route between Auckland and Vancouver, and he thought that in a short time steamers would be running between Auckland and British Columbia.
