Boxing Match Arranged between Slavin and Laing

A contest between H. F. Slavin, the Australian boxer, and Harry Laing, champion boxer of New Zealand, for the championship of the colony, has at last been arranged. The meeting between them will no doubt be looked forward to with great interest in sporting circles, not only in this colony, but in Australia. Mr J. E. Riley, of the Post Office Hotel, who has brought Slavin over from Australia, and is backing him in the coming match, received a telegram from Mr Chavannes, who is acting for him in Wanganui, Jo the effect that Laing was willing to make arrangements for a match for any sum over £100. Mr Riley at once replied as follows: "Will fight for any sum ; for £100 or over. Put down deposit for me on account of Slavin." Last evening Mr Riley received another telegram from Mr Chavannes, stating that he had deposited £20 for a match of £300.
