Extensive Bush Fires

TPBB UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION . Woodville, This Day. A fierce gale of wind last night caused the bush fires to spread in all directions. Fpr three hours the whole town was in imminent danger, when a shift of wind occurred, lessening the danger. The whole town turned ont, and were hard at work all night saving property. Two houses were destroyed. Another busy night is anticipated to«night, Fbathkbston, February 10. An extensive bush fire is burning on the side of the ranges between here and the Tauherinikau River. Messrs Lucas and Kelly's homesteads and stacks are in great danger, the fire completely surrounding them. Mr Levin's homestead is also in a certain amount of danger, and should tbe wind continue will be seriously threatened, the girse fence on the opposite side of the road having been on fire several times, Men are now employed in cutting the fences down to keep ' the fire from spreading. On Thursday last Masterton was literally wrapped in a dense heavy smoke, and bush fires was raging in various parts of the district. At Hastwell's clear* ing, near Manga mahoe, the fires have done an immense amount of damage, having destroyed a number of settler's houses, and practically wrecked the whole settlement. All the smalUfarm settlers are said to have been burnt out, and traffic was stopped by the fires' yesterday. Several sawmills was in danger!
