The Feilding Star. FEBRUARY 7, 1. 888. Horticultural Society

Ths autumn show of the Manchester Horticultural Society will be held in the beginning of March. For some years the shows of this society were attended with the most unqualified success, not only in the number and excellence of the exhibits, but the liberal patronage they received from the public who came from all parts of the district aud neighborhood to assist by their presence. We see no reason whatever why the coming show cannot be made equally attractive to aay of its predecessors. All that is required is a little activity on the part of the executive committee, and cordial support from the townspeople. Unless the latter take a more lively interest in the thing by attending meetings when called, and by giving freely in order that a good prize list may be got up, it cannot be expected the officials can do good work. We are aware many good people are of opinion these societies can be made " self supporting." This is quite a fallacy, and the sooner the idea is got rid of the better. We expect that an exhaustive canvass for special prizes will be made shortly, and trust the appeal will be liberally responded to. These shows have atendency to bring people together and are thus a direct means of doing good to the business of a place.
