The Solicitor- General has given bis opinion that payment of thirds can be made -by Government to special' settlements on account of work they m%y haye carried ont or are carrying oat, provided such association appoint a see* retary to receive tlie monej and to pay away the money for such purpose ; but in. future all work* must be curried out by county councils or road boards. , I Haweba. January 28. A young man named Astle<- attempted suicide this morning. He was a passenger from Wanganuiby the train, and immediately on his arrival in Hawera be wns arre>ted on a charge of obtaining money under false pretences •in Wan«anui. On being arrested be asked- permission of the police to visit the urinal. He was allowed to' do so, and at once shot himself in the left' breast, evidently having aimpd at the heart. The bail entered below the heart and travelled round- to the back. It is not yet known whether his' hfa will be saved.
