Bache Wright Harvey, D.D., of the Collegiate School, Wanganui, and late In-? cumbent of St. Paul's, Wellington ; aged 53 years. SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 1888. A Blunder Th* Wellinjfton Post of Thursday •ays— "It is rumoured, apparently on good authority, that a terrible blunder has been discovered in tbe loan legislation of last session. It will be remembered that a clause was introduced pledging the colony against any further borrowing for a period of three years. This, of course, was meant to aply after tbe North Island Trunk Railway and Public Works and Immigration Loans, sanctioned last session, were raised, but it is now said that the clause is so worded as to absolutely prohibit those loaus being placed on the market, and that until Parliament meets again there can be no loan of any kind raised." The Times of yesterday in reply has the following which may be accepted as authoritative— "' ,' "lt is quite true, as rumoured, that a clerical 'error has town disccvernd in the New Zealand Loan Act of last session, but it is not the case that, in consequence of this error, "no loan. of any kind" can be-raised-tmtil" Parliament meets again. As >a matter of fact the mistake, which odd^y enough escaped the notice of all the legaJ_,and financial^lujjninanes on ..both sides of the House, will not in any way interfere with the plans of the 3overnment, or put a stop to the floating of the North Island Trunk Railway loan, or prevent any 'borrowing that had been contemplated by the Government." A telegram from Auckland informs U8 ~ ,»■J. " : o;; .- ■: ': : ; "Sir Frederick Whitiker was interviewed with; respect to the wording of clause 19 of the Loan Act passed last session, and which; \>j an error prevents the borrowing of a million loan till 1891. He pointed out that according ttf 'terms of the clause there was nothing to prevent the floating ef the North Island Trunk Railway Loan at once; whilst the million loan can be raised temporarily in the colonieß if tbe Government are anxious to borrow before 1891. "Bir Frederick said the error in clause 19 could be amended by a special Act next session;" ' Local and General News ■ ■» — - We have to acknowledge receipt of a. batch of Parliamentary papers.
