The feilding Star. THURSDAY, JANUARY 19, 1888. No. 5 Ward

— — * ■ " ■ The meeting to be held at Taonui to-morrow evening to discuss the proposal of the Manchester Road Board to raise a loan of £4000, will be one of more than ordinary interest to the ratepayers of No. 5 ward. As we have mentioned before a good deal of very natural suspicion has been excited in the minds of electors resident in that particular ward by the fact that they, with No. 6 ward, are to be specially taxed to pay for works supposed to be of equal value to the whole Eoad District. It will be the duty of the conveners of the meeting to explain why such a one-sided arrangement should be suggested. Whether such explanation, if attempted, will be satisfactory, we hare now no means, of ascertaining, but if we may judge by the very outspoken ex* pression of opinion, of some of the ratepayers, we have reason to believe it will be accepted with very considerable doubt. For this very unsatisfactory state of things, we think the Board is in a great measure to blame by having allowed Warden Bull, J.P., to assume the whole control ol! the Board in matters relating to No. 5 ward. It is not likely that the ratepayers will virtually entrust so inexperienced and prejudiced a person as Warden Bull, J.P., with the control of the expenditure of so large a sum as £4000. We hope that Warden Bull, J.P., will have the courage of his opinions, and state openly at fte meeting what he really intends, or hopes, to do if the ratepayers are fools enough to put so much power in such weak hands as <his.
