SAD FATE OF AN INNOCENT WOMAN.
Maddened by Grief
Mtoboubne, January 10. On the sth January, there was committed to Kew Lunatic Aoylum a married woman named Morgan, Grief had broken her heart, and now she lies in a maniac's cell. Her brother, Thomas Jones, was to all appearances a short time ago a well-to-do draper at Hawthorne, but he departed from the path of honesty, and was soon a criminal. He was arrested for fraudulent insolvency, and lies at Penridge, serving a sentence of two years' imprisonment. His sister, Mrs Morgan, was forced to appear at the insolvency Court to give evidence, but she baffled the threats and inducements of Judge and Court officials, and could not be prevailed upon to open her lips. This is not all the trouble the poor female was called to bear. Her own husband, in the hour of trouble, deserted her, and she was left alone. When Jones was on his trial the evidence went to show that Morgan was Hot altogether Bpotless in the crime for which Jones was convicted, and the jury's verdict was, "Guilty but recommended to mercy," on the ground that he Lad been led into it by Morgan. A warrant was issued for Morgan on a charge of conspiring to defraud, but he preferred to bolt away rather than face the charge, and has not since been heard of. Her brother in gaol, and her husband fleeing from the stern arm of law, what wonder that the verdict of the doctors sheuld be, " Mrs Morgan is mad through grief."
