The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, JANUARY 1-V IBBB. The Manchester Road Board Loan

— .■" ♦ An influential resident in No 5 ward of the Manchester Road Distriot informs us considerable opposition will be offered to the proposed loan of £4POO, on the grounds that the rate •to pay interest will be levied on that ward only. It is looked upon as a hardship that ratepayers in No. 5 •ward should have been paying rates for years any money being! expended for their benefit, and when -their turn comes they should be -made to bear the total cost of new ] works which will be of equal profit to'] the whole block. The contention is the rate should be levied on all rateable property in the road district.; We are also informed that some! nadural suspicion has been excited in the minds til /many ratepayers, byi what apeaved lite an attempt ob the 1 vpart oftheir Warden £BtJij», yjsAj%p\ |j_(^ the bMittttionsof the proposals '.secret j but we reply to' tbat ''ire'.arej of opinion such suspjebas are altp-

gether unfounded, as, like his name- ' sake, Warden Bull could only see one thing at a time — and that was the case when he had the notices inserted in a paper out of the district. He did not care whether he injured the prospects of the loan so long as he had a butt at the Feildino Stab. We now ! urge upon voters, therefore, not to allow any sympathy with us to bias them at the ballot box. The works J proposed, if carried out, will prove of immense benefit to the Manchester Block. Of course we do not' expect ratepayers to lose sight of the fact they mean heavy-additional taxation, and people are now more careful how they place new burdens on those already crushing them down than they were a few years ago. We strongly advise everyone interested to attend the meeting to be held at Taonui on the 20th instant, in order tnat when the subject is being ventilated, any ratepayer having doubts may get them removed or satisfied. It would be a great pity for the proposals to fall through owing to what may, after all, be merely a misunderstanding of a few details.
