GREAT EXCITEMENT. > " " ■"'- ' "i • '■" - By Electric Telegraph.—- Copyright y STDiratT, January 11, . There is a great Sopia in the silver market here^ and alsb in Melbourne and Adelaide. The excitement here is most intense, nothing; like it having been known, for years past..- It was considered an extraording thing- when some time ago the Broken Hill Com--pany's shares went up to one hundred: . pounds, but yesterday they reached two hundred and twenty-three here, and in Adelaide they went up two pounds higer. Other mines, however, especially the Junction are sharing the rise. It is known that holders have made splendid profits during the last few days, and brokers in Sydney have not been so busy for years as they were yesterday, whilst in Melbourne one atock exchange firm did the largest husiness ever effected in one. day. Considerable excitement was also caused here by the publication in the papers of news of the -discovery of eilver deports at Fairfield. It appears that the existence of the deposit has been known for some time, hut the discoverers kept the fact to themselves until they secured a lease of the ground. . The average of ninetythree assays is. -..-. one hundred and eighty-five ounoes to the ton. A mining expert from Silverton thinks there will be twenty thousand people on the ground in two years.
