Macarthur, a letter, of which the following is a copy : — | ' y-7 ! 7, 1888. I Chairman Manchester Eoad Board, ; Sia^i^i'ain unexpectedly. called to ? Wellington, oa very tu-^ent business, I have to ask that my notice of motion for this meeting be allowed to stand over till the; next meetang of the Board. As the Hospital Bill did not pass the House there is /no necessity to take action. E wish' at the same time to protest against the proposed expenditure on Jones' road.a road which. »s not of much importance to the public affecting as it does the cpnvenieuce of the Warden of No: 2 Ward only and possibly one other ~ settler. The Warden for No. 2 Ward has uniformly objected to. expenditure on roßds loading to; sawmills, the great local • ' industry of . the district, thereby (if his > ' action^ jhad been supported}.' tending to throw many ratepayers out of .work. The ground he has ostensibly taken has been that the warda.affected were overdrawn. Now, that his ow% interests are - ooriceraed that consideration is to bo overlooked; 1 ' 1 am aware that he has : offered to /xmtribute Lone-third of the moriey,_ b.ut on |the> ground afe public i wterefet". the Board is not .warranted in spending even 1 th,e remaining two-thirds on a road «f : radh%inbT i im^riance,as. Jones', road. ' My waTdf^No.4ris in credit and I have hitherto forborne to press justand long outstanding claims for road construction in that ward until the Board's finances were completely restored. ; The Board; it must, remember, :haye to piur the Government £400 at the end of this month, there is also a liability, considerably overdue, of nearly £600 m addition, <■ which may be called uj* by the Government. Our revenue is about to be muck : reduced by the repeal of the Crown and Native Lands Eating Act, andiastly our. . siib'sidy.for this year will be less by ©no' half than lastyekr. On all th«se grounds I; ask the Board to pause before it incurs an expense not, warranted by ihe urgency of the case,, and to reject a claim whick would not be entertained -for, a moment under present circumstances were- it put forward by aiiyon* ele>« than a member of the Board. While main roads of great „ importance retoam unfinnhed, and whilst the ward concerned v is debt, such a claim is not a, reasonable o&e^rto use atpy. stronger teras.—l am &c., - . *r^. ; P.B.— As the last meeting was a special one for a special purpose it would be 1 in- - terestiag to know when authority «sh • given, and by whom, to. call for tend, for that work.
