A petition was presented by the Mayor from a large number of rate-payers-arid residents in the Borough, praying the present dog tax of 10s be reduced: The ' Mayor said the petition would have to be considered at the present meeting as the rate had been already fixed by a resolution passed at the last meeting, and such resolution would have ito ;be rescinded. Gr W"oirßf6ld said there were a lot of signatures 'on the petition who were not ratepayers. The report of the Public Works Committee was' also read, and accounts for £38 0s 9d recommended for payment. * • J ;,.. The discussion, of the dog tax petition was then resumed. . Proposed by Cr Fowles, seconded by_Or P. Thomsoß, That with reference to, the petition re the dbg tax, Mr Ourtis (who presented it' through the Mayor) be informed by the Town Clerk that this Council, regrets that they do not think it advisable to make any alteration in the amount of the tax.-^Carried. , There was some conversation about « sale at the pound of a certain beast impounded -by Mr J. C. Thompson. The Council decided it was best to take no action. Proposed by Gr P. Thompson, seconded by Cr Nicholas, That the resignation of Cr Bartholomew be accepted pjn'ith regret.— Carried. : Eesolved, That the Town Clerk draw £5 for petty cash. la reply to Cr Worsfold, the Mayor said satisfactory arrangements had' been made with the bank. The Clerk reported that the threat to i6sue summonses for outstanding rates had had a good effect, and. the revenue was now coming in. Cr Fowles said that Messrs P. and J. Bartholomew's timber drays could not cross the Kiwitea bridge, and that firm had made an offer to put up a certain part of the bridge in a substantial manner. The Public Works Committee had accepted the offer. The Engineer said the work had started under his supervision this morning. The cost would be^ £20, exclusive of the timber presented by Messrs. Bartholomew. Cr Fowles made a statement as to certain protective works being done at the 3&witea^ _ The Engineer said it was a wire netting crate, filled with boulders. It 'was cheap and strong. Some piles behind would be required to make a thorough job of it. The Mayor said the Council would support the Public Works Committee in what triey had done. Proposed by The Mayor, seconded l>y Cr Worsfold, That the Public Works Committee be authorised ; to construct the work at the Kiwitea bridge, as recommended by the Engineer. — Carried. The Mayor mentioned, that a request had been "made to him to have a plank put across the Beattie street bridge. Cr Worsfold they did not want to make it too convenient just now. Cr P. Thomson wanted to know ii the Council would follow the advice of the Stab re the loan. ■Cr Fowles hoped the burgesse* would know, how to vote without being button-holed. Cr Nicholas said it had beensug. gested that Teddy Turner should gc round wich the bell to rouse peoplt up. This \^a's all the business.
