The Governor, accompanedhy his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Fortesone, will proceed to Sydney by the Nelson about the 16th, for the purpose of attending the Australian centenary celebrations. No members of the Government will be present owing to urgent business to be transacted here. Greymouth, This Day. The barquentine Jasper, from Lyttelton, will load a cargo of coal for Mauritius. This will be the first cargo shipped direct for a foreign port. A bazaar opened for several days past, m aid of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Ohurch, has cleared about £700. .The harbor board during the year just closed has expended slightly over £76,080 , Two young lads met with rather a serious, accident at the Kaita Picnic. He would have been killed, but that he struck a boy named Martin on the shoulder and back, injuring him badly. . * . Invebcabgill. January 3. A boy named Spencer was killed en the Bluff line yesterday. His hat blew off, and it i» said that at the instigation of his companions, he leapt from the train to recover it, breaking his neck. The steeple* chase was won by Gilchrist. Nrmox, January 4. The first meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Kducattonal Institute was he'd in the hall of the Girls' College to* day. The President (Mr J. H. Harkness) delivered aa address, for which he received a very hearty vote of thanks. The meeting was a full one, and various committees were appointed to report on matter b of interest. Several of the mem* berß of the Council are being entertained by Miss Edgar, M.A.,*t the College.
