A rumour is current in town tbat the s.s. lonic had been (ost in the English Channel, but nothing has been received by the agents on the subject. Dunbdin, December 2. Messrs Dalgetty and Co. have received a telegram that the lonic arrived, all well, on Saturday last, so that the rumour which was circulated as to her being lost in the Channel is entirely without foundation. The child of a woman named Powell whose case excited considerable comment, died last night fmm being accidentally scalded. Wanoanvi, December 2. This morning the Chronicle apologised for the remarks reprinted from the Hawkes Bay Herald respecting Mrs Balm lance. The apology has been accepted by Mr Ballance. Hawbba, December 2. A journeyman tailor named George Davis, aged about 50, was found dead in his bed this morning at the Empire Hotel. It is believed that he died from natural causes.
