The Feilding Borough Council "will meet this evening. A most excellent "inset" is issued to-day from Te Aro House, Wellington. The Kaikoura, to arrive from London on Saturday, has 550 passengers on board for New Zealand ports. The Pahiatua Star-, says it is likely a Masonic Lodge will be opened at Eketahuna shortly. Foxton will soon "be a Borough. The local paper says the petition will contain one hundred and twenty signatures, or about twenty more than the required number. Tenders are invited by the Railway Department for 1000 totara sleepers fo." the Wanganui section. Specifications may be Been at the Railway Stations, Palmerston, Feilding, Halcombe, and Marton. A newspaper in the Catholic interest, to be called the New Zealand Catholic Times, will shortly be started in Wellington. Mr Cyril M. Weale, who has just arrived from Sydney, assumes the editorship of the new Catholic j ournal. Heaton, which occurred a* the residence of his son-in-law, Mr J Newman, on Tuesday last. The deceased, who was 68 years of age, was one of the oldest settlers in Palmerston, and was highly respected by a large circle of friends. The funeral takes plac« to-mor-row (Friday) at 2 p.m. We learn that Major-3eneral Sir Geo. Whitmore has determined upon taking up his permanent residence in England, and that he will leave the colony some time next year. Sir George has just completed the MSS of a work which, we believe, he intends publishing, and which will be of great interest to this colony. It is a complete history of the native disturbances on the East and West Coasts which he, as commander of the colonial forces, succeeded in suppressing.— Post. In the Court of Appeal at Wellington, on Tuesday last, judgment was given in the case of Joseph v. Staples, an appeal on a case won by Staples in a lower court. The effect of this decision is to affirm the liability of the owners of the s.s. Tui to the consignees for the loss of their goods when the vessel was wrecked through the negbgence of the master. Thiß should prove of interest to several business people in Feilding, who had goods consigned to them by the s.s. Tui. The dividends in two local bankrupt estates should also be increased by the decision recorded above. Mr La wry, M.H.B. for Franklin North nearly lost, to use his own expression, the number of his mess the other day. It appears he had a tooth drawn in the morning, and in the operation, nn arter* or vein was severed. The bleediug lasted pretty trell all the day, but had ceased when Mr Lawry had sank down to rest. During the niebt he wan awakened by a choking sensation, and fotmded a large lump of clotted blood in his mouth, while the pillow and bedding were saturated with blood "as if a sheep had been stuck," he Hays. To-day's Chronicle says : — The Secretary of the Education Board received circulars yesterday from the Education Department, Wellington, notifying that after the current quarter the payments to Boards will be calculated upon the "strict average" attendance, and not upon the " working average" an hereto* fore. Also that the Government do not intend to renew the vote for training of teachers, L 8000." and that consequently there will be no special grants on account of training of teachen after the end of next month. It is the intention of the Executive of the New Zealand Alliance to hold a Conference in Wellington at the time of the sitting of the Wesleyan Confereace, and the Grand Ledges of both sections of the 1.0.G.T.. so that a great number of representatives may "be present from all parts of the Colony. The date fixed as being most convenient is Monday, January 22rd, 1888. It v expected to be an all-day sitting, commencing at 10 o'clock a.m., when the chair will be taken by tb* President, the Hon.
