"Old Grumble" Dehorns a Cow
That nature resents any interference i with or attempts to alter her laws wa» never more apparent or curious than in one which transpired lately at Awahuri, wlittie a Bettier hiring heard of the benefits to be derived by the dehorniug of cattle, experimented upon a heifer calf a short time since, and awaited the result. The result came' —a wonderful one ; but a very different thing from what he anticipated (certainly it was his first attempt, and the modus operandi he does not state) for the horns came as naturally as though no mutilating knife had ever scarred them, but the animal's tail disappeared ; in fact it became dehorned at the wrong end, and there now roams about the pastures of the valley of the Oroua a nondescript animal whose fore part is that of a cow, while the hind quarters resemble those of a bear, and as its color is black and it is often grazing upon the wayside, the minds of people travelling from Awahuri to Palmereton whomay come upon it suddenly and new it from behind, are sometimes consid« erably exercised as to its peaceful character, and doubtful as to whether they may not experience an embrace tighter even than a sweetheart's hug<
