To-day was observed as a (general holiday, and the city wore a deserted appearance. Beside the races at Elieralie, a large, number of water excursions and picnics were organised, and the steamers carried large numbers to the various points out of town. Dunedtn, This Day. A jockey named Mackay, riding in the hack race, was heavily thrown, and taken to the hospital unoonscioms. He is reported to be dying. Taubanga, This Day. Michael Downey one of the oldest settlers, died this morning aged 61. He was an officer in the 68th Light Infantry, and took part in the famous engagements here at Gate Pa and Te Bangi. Wellington, This Day. At the Supreme Court in the case of the .National Insurance Company of Australian v. Mercantile TJuioa Insur* ance Company, judgment was given for £500. The claim was for £600, the amount of reinsurance taken by the latter company on Johnston's bnilding, which was partially destroyed bj the disastrous fire here in February. A man named Edward Boberts has been arrested, charged with maliciously wonnding Wo. Clements. The dispute arose out of a drink last night, when the former drew a knife and stabbed Clements in the arm and thigh. Nothing serious. Accused waa remanded.
